YOGI OF THE MONTH
December 2025 - Joan Carlson
What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?
I’ve dipped in and out of yoga for years. A few years back, I found InsideOut Yoga and decided it was time to make it a steady habit again.
What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?
As I’ve aged, my focus has shifted to building better balance, posture, and core strength.
What is your favorite pose and why?
Downward Dog tops my list—it stretches my back while strengthening my arms and core.
What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?
The Slow Flow class in Reedville. Living right here in Reedville, it’s perfect to have a great session so close to home.
How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?
Before retiring, yoga gave me calm and clarity amid a hectic work-life schedule. Now it keeps me healthy by sharpening balance and strength.
What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?
Keep showing up! Don’t sweat the poses you can’t nail right away—“you do you,” as Susan says. The challenge is half the fun!
What is your occupation?
I retired seven years ago after a long career in technology at Capital One Bank.
What activities do you enjoy?
I’m hooked on MahJongg—took a class in White Stone a few years ago and now play weekly with friends. I also love reading, cooking, and shooting trap at the local range.
What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?
The serene beauty of the Northern Neck and the stunning Chesapeake Bay surroundings.
Is there anything you want to add?
The October Italy retreat was absolutely incredible!!! The venue was ideal for a serene yoga escape, perfect for deepening your practice, while the solitude and breathtaking beauty of our surroundings were simply stunning.
