YOGI OF THE MONTH
February 2026 - Michelle Johnson
What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?
I first learned about yoga when I was a junior in high school. I attended a college tour and one of the workshops was an introduction to yoga.
As a young mother, I practiced yoga by watching Yoga in Practice on PBS and Rodney Yee’s Yoga DVDs. I started going to a studio 20 years ago in Richmond after work. After I retired several years ago, I was fortunate to find InsideOut Yoga.
What is/are your intentions for your yoga practice?
My intentions are to be a life-long student, where I can work on strength, mobility and flexibility. The practice of yoga has taught me the value of resetting and trying again.
What is your favorite pose and why?
One of my favorite poses is the Chair pose. It allows me to connect to my body’s core. It makes me feel strong and empowered.
What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?
First, I want to state that Susan is an amazing instructor!
I like the Functional Yoga (formerly Slow Flow) class. To me, it’s a fusion of Hatha and Vinyasa. I like the variety that it offers. I think the slower pace enhances mindfulness and relaxation. I also like the Vinyasa class as well.
How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?
Yoga is a restorative gift for me. As a hiker, yoga has provided the benefits of physical sustainability and mental clarity. I am stronger and much more mobile.
What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?
Give yourself grace. Over time, you will become more comfortable and reap the benefits of the practice.
What is your occupation?
I am a retired mental health administrator. I currently work part time as a licensed mental health therapist.
What activities do you enjoy?
Yoga, walking, hiking, traveling, being with family/friends.
What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?
The natural beauty of the water. Watching the sun rise and sunsets on the water. The close-knit communities.
Is there anything you would like to add?
The InsideOut community has not only broadened my support-base, but I have also met some extraordinary people. At my first InsideOut retreat I experienced an instant and impactful connection. It brought a new meaning to the quote, “Your vibe attracts your tribe” (Lyra Montgomery)
