YOGI OF THE MONTH

June 2025 - Dana Smook

What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?

I’ve been practicing yoga for about 15 years. I first joined a community center class simply to add more movement into my life–but I quickly noticed how good it made me feel, both physically and mentally. So I kept going back.

What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?

My intention is to make space for turning inward—listening deeply, softening when needed, and growing stronger and more flexible both in body and spirit.

What is your favorite pose and why?

Supine twist. It provides a really nice release through the lower back and I love how supportive it feels.

What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?

I am more of a Slow Flow yogi, but I like the Vinyasa class, too, when I feel like a challenging workout.

How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?

Yoga has taught me how to listen to my own needs and connect more deeply with myself. At first, my practice was purely physical—I resisted the mental, emotional, and spiritual parts. As I returned to yoga through hard times in my life, I began to understand all it has to offer: stillness, care, healing, and space to begin again.

What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?

Listen deeply to your body and allow your practice to move and shift at its own pace. Be gentle with yourself. Practicing regularly, even just for a few minutes each day, can create truly meaningful change.

What is your occupation?

I have spent most of my adult life working in public libraries, but I stepped away from that career last year. Now I’m focusing on teaching yoga classes and parenting my young daughter.

What activities do you enjoy?

Yoga, gardening, camping, birdwatching, reading, cooking.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?

Beautiful rural surroundings and friendly people.

Is there anything you want to add?

I love exploring different yoga classes and learning from a variety of teachers. Even though I live an hour from White Stone, it’s always worth the hike—Susan’s classes are among the best I’ve attended anywhere! I’m so grateful to have found the InsideOut Yoga community. It’s been a real source of inspiration for me. I’m honored to share this space with Susan and her students.
