YOGI OF THE MONTH

March 2026 - Shauna McCranie

What first brought you to yoga and how long have you been practicing?

I’ve been doing yoga off and on for many years. I’ve always been a very active person and love to exercise but often have found it difficult to prioritize the time. I’ve been participating with the Reedville yoga group for over a year now consistently. I’ve placed this class at the top of my priority list because of the benefits I’ve seen in my balance, flexibility, and weight loss. This class has helped me to strengthen my muscles as I have lost weight over the course of the year.

What is/are your intention(s) for your yoga practice?

Besides maintaining balance and muscle as I age, yoga also helps clear my mind and settle my spirit. I feel lighter and in a better mindset when I leave class. It keeps me grounded and starts my week off on a high note!

What is your favorite pose and why?

I like Happy Baby because it helps relieve tension in my lower back.

What is your favorite class at InsideOut Yoga?

I’ve only participated in the Reedville class at Bethany Church, but I would like to try some new classes in the future as well.

How has the practice of yoga influenced your life?

By being consistent, I feel mentally empowered and physically stronger. I can do things with greater ease and flexibility and feel more confidence in my appearance and self-esteem after my year of practice.

What advice would you have for a beginning yoga student?

Always remember and look at yoga as a practice, the more you practice the easier and more comfortable you’ll feel in reaching your goals and those more challenging poses.

What is your occupation?

I recently retired and am now substitute teaching at Lancaster Elementary School. I have the stamina thanks to yoga to work with all ages, even Kindergarten all day!

What activities do you enjoy?

I love reading and I also just started watercolor classes.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula?

I grew up in Reedville but have lived in Lancaster all of my adult life. The NNK is charming and friendly. It’s equally scenic and beautiful. We’re lucky to live in such a quaint place.

Is there anything else you want to add?

I just want to thank Susan for her great leadership and encouragement. She doesn’t have to make the trip to Reedville, but for those of us in her Monday afternoon class, we are grateful!
